US 80/GA 26

US 80 spans half the country. It use to span the whole thing, but the length from Texas to San Diego was decomissioned. In Chatham County, US 80 directs those coming from the direction of Macon, Georgia, into town, and over to the islands. The road's eastern terminus is on Tybee Island. This page details the route running from west to east. I currently don't have photos for any segment other than when the road goes to the islands. Those will come later.

Saffold Drive

Heading towards Whitemarsh Island is a regular ol' shield.

The road turns into the shopping districts of Whitemarsh Island. Up ahead is the interchange for the Island Expressway.

Here we have the overhead interchange for the eastern end of the Island Expressway. US 80 continues towards Wilmington Island.

US 80 is about to leave Wilmington Island after crossing Johnny Mercer Blvd.

For the next few miles we have a long strip of nothing.

Here are some shots of the marsh that US 80 travels through.

Fort Pulaski sits on the north end of McQueens Island.

One mile left before arriving at Tybee Island.

Butler Avenue (aka Historic Tybee Lighthouse Causeway)

US 80's final destination.

The other name for this road is the Historic Tybee Lighthouse Causeway, although it is not labeled that way on any road signs.

Here are shots of the first 2 miles of Tybee Island, including the first shield. Looks like civilization is returning.

Upon arriving at the beach, the route hooks right and heads south.

The intersections are very pedestrian friendly since parking is located across from the beach.

Here's the official eastern terminus of US 80/GA 26. There used to be a sign saying the other end is in San Diego, but it was removed upon the decomissioning of half the route. The western end is now in Texas.

A friendly reminder about hurricanes.

This is the first shield of US 80 heading westward.
